What does it feel like flying ?

We all asked ourselves such a question one day. Today we can fly by the means of airplanes and other flying crafts but none is able to fly by his own means because we are terrestrial creatures. We don’t have wings behind the shoulders, but just our arms...and they aren't fluffy !
So how to live such feeling on our own, as freely as we are, as you are...How to get in the air without caring of something artificial to handle or so ? I think I somewhat experienced the answer to that question following an initiatory ritual coming from the New Hebrid islands called the Benji jump.

Today Benji jump is a well known activity among people in quest of strong emotions and high adrenalin rates. I assume these days I was in the need of such experience, so I went for it.

The Artuby Bridge, built in 1947 according Gustave Eiffel techniques, is said the today’s highest bridge ever in Europe for benji jumping. This spot is famous among the benji jump lovers and some Australian benji jump aficionados even come up to this place to live the freak.

The Artuby Bridge is 182 meters high, about two third of the Eiffel tower 's height, or about twice as high as the Arche de la Défense in Paris. Jumping from the Artuby bridge involves a 130 meters partially decelerated fall + a truly unique 30 meters benji fall.

My first jump was a very unique experience. Here is the way I can describe it:

21st November 2004...Lot of sun, cool temperatures (8°C), chilly wind...
Like a baptism of air, I lived that day like an "air celebration". The morning preceding the jump I realised at last in my own existence I had an unusual "Rendez Vous' with my own life and with myself. A kind of “cross-talk” between my life continuum and the time of a jump decision in the vastness. I was on the way to conciliate and to deal with it. It was also a great matter of trust, trusting the people organizing the jumps session, trusting the physical world, and for sure, trusting a thousand of small latex wires forming the main elastic cordage.

For what I considered as a kind of celebration of Life too, I had in mind the will to show the best from me, to appreciate every seconds prior and during the jump. I bit like we do for every key stages occuring in our respective life, like a birth or an engagement for example. I knew I would be a kind of new born person down there...

Jumping from the Artuby Bridge for the first time was also a matter of fear. It was a fight against an instinctive human fear. Fear of heights, fear of the unknown...

Then came the moment to be geared with a harness and leggings. I knew the great experience got closer and the huge smile I had initially could eventually turn down, but I kept it up as is until the last moment. Despite all I managed to afford not getting my jaws on the floor and lived this singular episode with excitement and happiness...but I asssume my soul started naturally to confine in it’s most radical and primitive behaviour.

Came the moment to put the feet on the bridge’s edge and to ineluctantly read the scape's huge depth while following my feet positions. Came the moment to release these hands that were ensuring me while I was stand up in front of the "vaccum" until the go. I didn’t felt an urge to jump, but someone had already started the countdown for me. There was no way back and I was really there to prove something to myself : My own proof that I had a Will much stronger than my fears.

"3...2...1...." Then I started to bow my knees to voluntarily jump in the vastness with a cross shaped attitude, streching my arms backwards like a bird taking flight.
On the spur of the moment I gave a boost and my feet left the concrete : I realised at this point I was like kissing Life in the weightlessness. A strange and subtle feeling. And the gravity started then to express its force : within half a second, all the crowd activities and the sounds still occurring on the bridge behind me vanished. So I entered a world of silence and peace.

The time scale got expanded. All my senses were tresholded to their paroxism.

Then the air started to swirl in my ears louder and louder. The gorge landscape went by faster and faster. My attention wasn’t drawn down to the ground. The ground... this piece of evidence to the end of the fall, was sitting in the middle of my sight but I wasn’t doing with it as I felt like there was no end. I dare to think I was perhaps hearing with my skin, listening with my eyes, watching with my ears…

Then a big 'slap' occurred , the wire got finally stretched to its maximum length and started to take me up again, also to wake me up in a sense ! Back to the initial silence, back to the extremums, up and down, back to that initial feeling of weightlessness but with less intensity...

This web page was recently and quickly designed. But I will next propose you an enhanced wersion of my report by importing multiple angles video shots, one was especially made carrying a digital movie capable camera during the jump, so you will live the freak you too ! Keep watching !...

The jumps session was organised by the Marseille based company 'Latitude Challenge' (www.latitue-challenge.fr)
